Preparing for Your Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy is a crucial procedure for detecting and preventing colorectal cancer. Proper preparation is essential to ensure the procedure's success and accuracy. Follow these steps to prepare for your colonoscopy:
1. Dietary Changes
Three Days Before the Procedure:
Eat a low-fiber diet.
Avoid foods like seeds, nuts, corn, popcorn, and most raw vegetables.
Stick to easily digestible foods such as white bread, pasta, rice, well-cooked vegetables without skin, fruit without skin or seeds, lean meat, chicken, fish, and eggs.
One Day Before the Procedure:
Switch to a clear liquid diet.
Drink only clear liquids such as water, broth, clear juices (apple or white grape), sports drinks, and popsicles (avoid red or purple liquids).
Do not eat any solid foods.
2. Bowel Preparation
Afternoon/Evening Before the Procedure:
Take the prescribed laxative solution as directed by your doctor. This is usually done in 2 doses at 2pm and 8pm.
Drink plenty of fluids to help flush out your system. Stop all fluids at midnight.
Morning of the Procedure:
Stop drinking anything at least 4 hours before your appointment, as instructed by your doctor.
3. Medication Considerations
Consult Your Doctor: Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter medications and supplements. You may need to adjust or temporarily stop certain medications before the procedure.
Blood Thinners: If you are on blood thinners, discuss with your doctor how to manage them before your colonoscopy. It usually should be held a few days before your procedure.
4. Important Points to Remember
Follow Your Doctor's Instructions Carefully: Your doctor will provide specific instructions based on your individual needs.
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids throughout the preparation process to prevent dehydration.
Contact Your Doctor if You Have Any Concerns: If you experience any severe discomfort, nausea, or other issues during the preparation process, reach out to your doctor.
5. Day of the Procedure
Transportation: Arrange for an adult to drive you to and from the procedure. The medications given to help you relax during the test will affect your judgment and reflexes for the rest of the day.
Belongs: Leave all the removable jewelries or valuable at home. No personal electronic devices will be allowed in the procedure area, so shut them off or leave them with your families. We are not responsible for any lost valuables or devices.
